Who you see firstYour filters (who you want to see, ages and distance; social energy with Lit+; love language too with Lit Max) decide who’s in your deck, and so do “How in sync, at least”, Verified only and the kids filter if you set them; people who haven’t answered a filter’s question still show up.
Knocks (who kept you)When you Keep someone, they’re told: you show up in their Knocks right away, by name, whatever plan either of you is on.
Lights Off (picking by words)Lights Off shows people’s written answers one at a time (their prompts, and answers they wrote only for Lights Off) with a first name, age and distance in miles, never a photo.
Lantern Hour (tonight’s question, near you)Each night the question everyone gets (the one Lights Off shows) becomes a thread for your area.
Your location and distanceIf you allow location, your phone’s position is rounded to about 1 km before it’s used, and only to work out distances.
Demo profilesWhere MakeItLit! has just started, you can choose to see demo profiles to try the app before many people have joined.
Chats and dates
Messages and unsendMessages go to the person you’re talking to.
“What are we?” and The Fine PrintOnce a chat is going, either of you can ask “What are we?”.
Photos in chatPhotos stay in the chat for 30 days.
Games in a chatFind Me and Date Bingo, for two people who have both written in the chat.
High Key datesLive dates in a chat with selfies, Glowflicks (a few frames of a moving selfie) and voice bits.
GIFsWhen you search for a GIF, your phone sends what you type straight to GIPHY, and GIPHY sees your phone’s internet address, as any website does.
Hard Launch cardsOnce you’ve both said Hard Launch in “What are we?”, either of you can make a picture to announce it: a look and a size, and, if you choose, your first names, your main photos and the answer of each of you that got the other.
Your profile
Verification (the Solid badge)Verifying is optional, and there are two ways to the same Solid badge.
Photo and word checksA new profile photo (or Your Grove background picture) stays private until our automated check for nudity, violence and hate passes, and only then is shown.
Sensitive informationYour gender and who you want to see, and, only if you add them, your private bedroom answers, “Faith” among your values, some Open book topics and your religion, can reveal sensitive things about you.
Compatibility and your typeOnly what you tell us: how you describe your looks, your love language, social energy, movie and music taste, religion, and what you’re drawn to.
Your Grove (decorating your profile)Your Grove changes how your whole profile looks when someone opens it: a layout, photo frames, a tilt, how your photos show (as laid out, a slideshow or a collage), how your likes and dislikes show, an accent color, the order of the parts, and a background.
Safety
Reports, hiding and bansReport anyone from their profile or a chat; our safety team reviews it.
No background checksMAKEITLIT!
Fraud-ban alertsIf we ban an account for fraud or a false identity, everyone it sent a message to is told right away: in the app, by notification and by email, all at the same time.
Removing intimate imagesIf an intimate image of you was shared without your consent, whether or not you use MakeItLit!, ask us to remove it: “Remove an image” in the Safety center (no account needed), or makeitlit.app/takedown.
Encrypted safety copiesThings that disappear (a message you unsend, a view-once photo, a High Key selfie or voice bit, your account when you delete it) disappear for everyone at once, but we keep an encrypted copy for 7 days for safety reports and lawful requests.

Ads on the free planOn the free plan, ads from Google (AdMob) show between videos in the feed, and when you choose to watch one for a reward.
Plans and invites
Lit+ and Lit MaxMonthly subscriptions through your phone’s app store.
InvitesShare your invite code or link; a friend can enter it in their first 7 days.
Personal invitesAn invite to one person that says it’s from you and why, sent from your own Messages or mail app (MakeItLit! never texts or emails anyone).
Your account
Adults onlyMakeItLit! is only for people 18 and over.
Signing inAmazon Web Services runs sign-in for us (Amazon Cognito).
One account per personTo stop fake and duplicate accounts, invite abuse and banned accounts coming back, the app makes a code from your phone’s device identifier (never the identifier itself).
Seeing your dataMenu, then Settings, then Download my data, gives you a copy of what’s stored for your account: account details, your profile (private answers too), what you agreed to and when, Keeps and Vanishes, mutuals, friends, blocks, conversations, your What are we?
Deleting your accountMenu, then Settings, then Delete account (or makeitlit.app/delete-account).
